Regardless of whether you are a vegan or not, organic foods are a smart priority. However, for many the choice between buying organic and non-organic foods can be a difficult one as the cost can be difficult to bear. This is also the case with ‘organic coconuts’.
Over the years there have been many myths and misconceptions regarding imported coconuts from Thailand into Australia and the use of Methyl Bromide. We wrote a brief article about this which can be found here
Around mid 2014 an organic coconut hit the Australian shelves. We were amazed as we have tried to source organic in the past but found it difficult if not impossible. We knew of wild harvested coconuts from far North Queensland but we had a somewhat underwhelming experience as we found the quality to be poor and quality to be too inconsistent. Granted this was over five years ago so this situation may have changed since then.
We digress. We immediately contacted our supplier to find out more and came to some shocking results. The Australian Certified Organic coconuts were not organic and worse yet, independent testing revealed high levels of chemicals. The test results can be downloaded here*. It is our understanding that the following result for Methyl Bromide <5 is the lowest level that can be tested for. What is more concerning is that the the organic coconuts tested positive for Sodium Metabisulphite 195 mg/kg. Interestingly one of the major supermarket chains conducted their own testing and the product quietly disappeared from shelves.
We are confident that our supply is chemical free as our supplier conducts regular independent testing. A sample of TheGreenCoconuts supplier testing can be downloaded here*
